Interesting TED Talk by Nigel Marsh about work-life balance. Some of the things he spoke about are as follows:
We need an honest debate if we are going to make any progress on this issue. Government and corporations will not solve this issue for us. It is up to us to take control and responsibility for the type of lives we want to lead. If we do not design our life, someone else will…and we may not like their idea of balance.
It is not just bad companies…all commercial companies are inherently designed to get as much out of you as possible (as they can get away with). It is up to us to set the boundaries in our life.
Because of the lack of highly skilled people (think of some those IT jobs that seem to have been open forever), it is a candidate driven market for those positions. It has been so for a few years now and many predict that it will remain so. The candidates have the power…not the companies. So when highly skilled people start to demand, “I won’t work so much overtime anymore”…what do you think is going to happen?
